Chapter One Introduction


In this chapter, firstly, section 1.1 will provide a general description of thepresent study. The objectives of this study will be introduced in the section 1.2.Section 1.3 will show the significance of this study. 1.1 Topic Statement
Abstract is the most important part of an academic paper. It highly summarizesthe main points of one paper. The purpose of writing an abstract is to make the readersunderstand what the papers talk about in short time and help the readers make surewhether they are interested in the papers, then they can decide to read the whole paperor not. A successful abstract can make the readers understand the whole paper inlimited time and achieve the useful information as much as possible. In China, withthe international academic communication becoming closely day by day, now allkinds of academic papers usually need the English abstracts. English abstracts havebecome the main ways to achieve the new knowledge in academic communication.There exists various definitions on abstracts. ANSI (American NationalStandards Institute) defines that “an abstract is the abbreviated and accuraterepresentation of the content of a document, preferably prepared by its authors forpublication with it” (ANSI, 1979). 摘要是一篇学术论文的最重要的部分。它高度概括一文中的要点。写一个抽象的目的是使读者破甲站立,谈论论文在很短的时间,帮助读者做出确定他们是否有兴趣在报纸上,那么他们就可以决定读取整个纸或。一个成功的摘要可以使读者了解整个纸,在有限的时间,尽可能获得有用的信息。在中国,成为了与国际学术交流密切一天一天,现在各类学术论文通常需要英文摘要。英文摘要已成为主要的方式来实现学术交流的新知识。摘要存在不同的定义。ANSI(美国国家标准协会)定义,“一个抽象的缩写而准确地代表一个文件的内容,最好是由它的作者准备出版”(ANSI,1979年)。According to Kitty O. Locker, “an abstract is thebrief summary of a large project (a thesis, research report, performance, serviceproject, etc.) which briefly describes the content and scope of the project andidentifies the project’s objective, its methodology and its findings, conclusions, orintended results”(Kitty O. Locker, 1997). ERIC (Education Resources InformationCenter) puts it into “abstract as an abbreviated representation of a document, withoutadded interpretation or criticism. A person who writes an abstract must take a largerwork, find essence, and represent it concisely and accurately, without injection the abstractors’ personal biases”(ERIC, 1980). The above three definitions are fromdifferent aspects, but they have the similar views of abstract, they all concern itsnature and functions. What they all emphasize is the conciseness of abstract.
As a special textual type, English abstract has the specific writing model for thestructure. Then how to hold the characters of the abstracts is the key for writing asuccessful English abstract. Halliday proposed three metafunctions, namelyexperiential, interpersonal and textual (Halliday,1984). The textual function is one ofthe three. The thematic progression is one of the main ways to realize the textualmetafunction, one way in which the theme of one clause picks up or repeats themeaning from the preceding theme or rheme (Platridge, 2000: 139). The applicationof thematic progression in abstracts can help the readers know what the authors wantto tell, and then the readers can research the structure of the paper better. So the use ofthematic progression decides the quality of an English abstract in great extent.
