A global link between national diversity policies? The case of the migration of Nigerian physicians to the UK and USA
Geraldine Healy and Franklin Oikelome
Abstract This paper considers global diversity management in relation to migrationfrom Africa, specifically Nigeria, of doctors to the UK and the 代写美国硕士论文USA. It seeks todemonstrate the importance of global diversity strategies for African countries, oftendriven by ethnic tensions. It argues that these tensions play their part in the decisions tomigrate. It also brings in the triadic relationships to global diversity analysis and
demonstrates that diasporic professional groups play often hidden roles in the diversitystructures of the destination country and provide important means of connecting with theircountry of origin.
Keywords Diversity management; diversity policies; Medical migration.
Introduction
Studies on global diversity management will often start from the level of themultinational enterprise (MNE) (see O¨ zbilgin, 2005) and they will be shaped bythe conditions of global capital. To understand the multi-faceted nature of globaldiversity, this paper takes a different starting point; that of a global labour force, inparticular the conditions surrounding the migration of highly skilled labour from less
developed to developed countries. Whilst there is undoubtedly a link between globalcapital and migration, that is not the concern of this paper. Instead, the paper focuses onthe dynamic global interconnectedness of the migration of physicians from one country,
Nigeria, to the UK and the USA. In particular, it seeks to demonstrate how macro policiesin the homeland on the management of diversity may provide the conditions formigration. In doing so aims to (a) provide insight into the nature of diversity management
policies in a less developed country; (b) the interrelationship between the impact ofmacro policies on meso and micro practice in the destination country; and (c) how theexperience of diversity may influence the process of identification following migration.
This provides an important contrast to studies that concentrate on transnationals’ policiesor solely on the destination countries for migrant labour. The paper is therefore organizedin five main sections: revisiting theories of migration and its triadic relationships; global
medical migration; diversity management in Nigeria; why Nigerian doctors leaveNigeria; and the role of professional networks in the triadic relationship. The prime aim
