American Baseball in the Dominican Republic:Exploitation of the American Dream as a form of Neocolonialism

It is an ironic reality that the United States of America, having 代写美国论文liberated itself from the control of the British Empire seeking independence and freedom for itself, seems to have the tendency to inhibit the freedom of other countries in the American Continent, particularly those of Latin America. Over the course of the last one-and-a-quarter centuries, the United States has achieved this by military intervention in several of the countries of interest. At present, though American military presence in Latin America is much reduced, the cultural and economic influence that the United States has over this region is undeniable. A significant American cultural aspect that has permeated throughout Latin America is the ideal of the American Dream: that in the land of opportunity (the U.S.), all of an individual's goals may be fulfilled through talent and hard work. This ideal has driven those with sufficient skill to try their hand at fulfilling this dream, especially in the area of American sport. In viewing sport as a means of economic salvation, entire countries may fall into a fervent, blinding love with an American game, which can arguably lead to a reduction of their independent function. The Dominican Republic is one such nation. Based on the situation of American baseball in the Dominican Republic, it can be argued that the idea of the American Dream is used as a mechanism of control and exploitation by the United States over a country with lesser power and resources than itself: in effect, a means of neocolonialism.

The term “neocolonialism” warrants definition before any further discussion of its mechanism of action on the Dominican Republic by the United States. Neocolonialism is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “the economic and political policies by which a great power indirectly maintains or extends its influence over other areas or people.” According to this definition, it can be argued that the great power of the United States uses baseball to influence the Dominican population in its favor.
