Abstract: Toni Morrison, who has received Nobel Prize with her Beloved, is one of the representatives of black women writers. Her other novels are highly appreciated. In this paper, her novel Love will be analyzed according to the African American Vernacular English characteristics. The characteristics of African American English include the dropping of “g” at the end of words, the double negation, and so on. This paper will analyze the novel Love from these aspects. From this analysis, this paper will show Toni Morrison’s consciousness of her responsibility as a black writer. She writes for African American’s identity, African American community and the African American women.

Introduction: African American Vernacular English (AAVE) is also called African American English. It is an African American variety (dialect) of American English. Its pronunciation is common to Southern American English, which is spoken by many African Americans and many non-African Americans in the United States. There are many literary uses of this variety of English, particularly in African-American literature. This paper will analyze the African American Vernacular English characteristics in Love by Toni Morrison.
Toni Morrison is a Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning American author, editor, and professor. Among her best known novels are The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, and Beloved. Love is her eighth novel. In her non-linear style, the lives of several women and their relationships to the late Bill Cosey are uncovered.
Love is the story about Bill Cosey, a charming but dead hotel owner. Or rather, it is about the people around him, all affected by his life — even long after his death. The main characters are Christine, his granddaughter and Heed, his widow. The two are the same age and used to be friends but some forty years after Cosey’s death they are enemies, and yet share his mansion. Again Morrison used split narrative and jumps back and forth throughout the story, not fully unfolding until the very end. The characters in the novel all have some relation to the infamous Bill Cosey.
Similar to the concept of communication between the living and the dead in Beloved, Morrison introduced a character named Junior; she was the medium to connect the dead Bill Cosey to the world of the living.

African American Vernacular English shares several characteristics with Creole English language-forms spoken by people throughout much of the world. African American Vernacular English has pronunciation, grammatical structures, and vocabulary in common with various West African languages.

Many features of African American Vernacular English are shared with English-dialects spoken in the American South. A number of the features—such as the deletion of is—are used much more frequently by black speakers, suggesting that they have their origins in black speech.
