1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
The main domain of research in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is to reveal the interactions among language, power and ideology. As a multi-disciplinary researching tool, CDA takes a close look at the textual properly of a discourse and at the same time takes the social and historical elements into account. From the 1980s, more and more linguists adopt CDA to analyze political discourse.
The 2008 American presidential election has drawn attentions both national and international wide. It is certainly intriguing that Barack Obama, a visibly Black man, should have positioned himself so rapidly and successfully as a viable and credible candidate for the presidency of the United States, garnering so much political support from White citizens in a country known for its history of deeply embedded racist traditions. As the first African American to hold office, Obama's victory singles a great change in American history.
Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, United States, on August 4, 1961,to Stanley Ann Dunham, a white American woman of English descent and Barack Obama Sr., a black oversea student from Kenya. Of his early childhood, Obama recalled, "that my father looked nothing like the people around me一that he was black as pitch, my mother white as milk一barely registered in my mind" (Obama 2004: 11).From 6 to 10 years old, Obama lived in Indonesia, attending local school there. In 1971,Obama returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents. Obama described his struggles as a young adult to reconcile social perceptions of his multiracial heritage in his book, Dreams from红Father (Obama 2004: chapter 4 and chapter 5).
On February 10, 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States. After a close campaign in the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries against Hillary Clinton, he won the party's nomination, becoming the first major party African American candidate for president. Then, Obama proceeded to focus on the general election campaign against Senator John McCain, the Republican nominee. On November 14, 2008, Obama won the election and became the 44t" American President.
Throughout the campaign, Obama delivers hundreds of speeches, emphasizing the issues of rapidly ending the Iraq War, increasing energy independence and providing universal health care. In December 2008, Time magazine named Barack Obama as its Person of the Year for his historic candidacy and election, which it described as "the steady march of seemingly impossible accomplishments" (Von Drehle 2008a). Many of Obama's speeches have been put on websites like YouTube, or edited into books and published for the public's review. However, people always pay much attention to Obama's excellent speech skills, and ignore the complex relationship of ideology and power hidden behind the speeches.
We must be aware that Obama's success has become an international phenomenon, which attracts both political scientists and linguists' attentions. Why such a young black politician with rather limited political experience can beat a veteran who has rich experiences in handling both military and political issues like John McCain? Why Obama's campaign speeches are more persuasive than McCain's?论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
