本文通过对及物性系统中物质过程、心理过程、关系过程、言语过程、行为过程和存在过程的过程本身及参与者的定量分析进行数据统计并试图通过所得数据发现两篇就职演说在及物性的这两个因素上的异同。
Introduction
Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistics shows the three metafunctions of language: the ideational function, the interpersonal function, and the textural function. According to Halliday, language is used to sever a variety of different functions, and among which it is firstly used to express people's experience of both the outer world and the inner world of his own consciousness. That is what Halliday called the ideational function of language. The transitivity system is a very important component of ideational function. In the transitivity system, the world of experience is represented :six processes, namely, the material process, the mental process, the relation process, the behavioral process, the verbal process and the existential process. Because that the transitivity system can provide a quantitative analysis of the discourses, which is more convincing and objective, many scholars use this theory to do certain discourse analysis. So far, there have already been many papers on discourse analysis from the perspective of transitivity system. These papers have given a profound analysis about the discourses they have selected. However, most of the papers analyze just one singular discourse or discourses from different recourses in the same era, few papers pay attention to the discourses that are produced in different eras, so it is necessary to carry out such research on this aspect.
This paper chooses two inaugural addresses delivered in different eras as the objects of research: the inaugural address delivered by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 and the inaugural address delivered by Barack Obama in 2009. As the relationships between different countries have become closer and closer, policies taken by one country may dramatically influence the other countries. America, as the most powerful country in the world, draws the attention of the whole world. The inaugural addresses aim at showing the political stance and political view; and in the inaugural addresses, the presidents usually show their policies in economy, foreign affairs, military and other aspects. Because of these reasons, the inaugural addresses have always been the focus of the world, especially in a world where globalization develops .The newly elected American president Barack Obama's inaugural address has aroused interest of the world, not only because he is the only African-American president and the first black president in the American history so far, but also because he took off ce when the economic crisis has overwhelmed the world. The world situation reminds people of another president in the American history: Franklin D. Roosevelt who was elected the president during the Great Depression. This paper chooses the first inaugural address delivered by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, and the inaugural address of Barack Obama in 2009 as research objects.
