通过运用计算机语言学家Mick O'Donnell的UAM Corpus Tool软件,分析了语料中的态度资源,定量分析和定性分析互为补充。通过定量分析,我们揭露了态度子系统的各个分支在奥巴马每周电台演讲的分布,而通过定性分析进一步深入了对各个资源的理解。
Chapter I Introduction
American president's weekly radio addresses have been a tradition, and the program has received most attention from the public. It is not only a kind of Public speaking, which is a time-honored activity in Western civilization, but also a radio program. Why can Obama's weekly addresses narrow the distance between the President and American people is a question that needs our study. His words are full of vigor and powerful. But how Obama achieved his purpose is still an issue that under our consideration.
Appraisal theory is a relatively recent theory put forward by James Martin in the 1990s. The development of Appraisal theory (Martin 2000) has opened up areas of research on interpersonal meanings. It is a new theory in language research, especially concerning the study of the language of evaluation, attitude and emotion, and with a set of resources, which explicitly position a text's proposals and propositions interpersonally (White 2001).
In this thesis, the subtype of Appraisal Theory (Martin&White)---Attitude is used as the theoretical framework. Through quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, we can see that there are rich attitudinal resources in Obama's weekly addresses. And the distribution features of the attitudinal resources in the text of Obama's weekly address as well as its reasons for its distribution features.
1.1 Purpose of the Study
In this study the author aims to find out that, firstly, the distribution features of the attitudinal resources in Obama's weekly address; Secondly, how Obama properly opens up a negotiation space with his listeners through these resources, that is, how the interpersonal meanings in his weekly radio address are realized through these attitudinal resources; Appraisal resources are massively distributed in the discourse of political speeches and their interpersonal meta-function in this particular kind of discourse is supposed to build and enhance political persuasion. Based on such a hpothesis, the present research aims to study how attitudinal resources within the framework of Appraisal theory operate in building the overall persuasive function of political speeches, how the president distributes appraisal resources in his speech to make a powerful argumentation and how the president skillfully realizes his various political purposes.
