show the statuses of different races. These races often depicted as lower than the white race and need to bring up. Art is also changed over time because in this era the oil painting focused on the background of the person unlike the other oil paintings where face was in focus. It is also shows the wealth of a person and what he/she thinks about themselves.
In this chapter author shows us how women are depicted in oil paintings. These paintings show different roles of women they are depicted in early day life. Some paintings are from Greek mythology and some are from 14 to 18th century. In these paintings women are shown as a symbol of authority because women are the one who takes care of their families and they are considered as one of the two central figures of the family.
These are not just the women's paintings but there are few paintings which depicts the females of different animals. This show the women are now center of attention and they like it. That is how women should be treated and society should give women respect what she deserves.
Advertisement is modern day example of art and it is also a modern day example of art in a way that how women are portrayed in them. Women are depicted as an object and to attract male audience in the society. These women are shown in way that men want them and women want to be like them. That is how media and advertisement or publicity business works. People always connect material things with desire and pleasure and that what advertisements show us. Women became symbol of pleasure and joy over time because many women never worked in western society during 15th through 19th century and they stayed at home as a house wife and only take care of their families. Modern day art show that women and pleasure are connected very closely especially in the society where men is a dominant power.
Q 3: Yes there are some ideas which I feel so difficult because they were little too subtle like symbolism and mythology because I am not a pro in Greek History and it is hard to tell everything related to this period of time. Some things in ancient Greek history are well known and everyone knows about them as do I but some things are totally unknown to me like relation between Venus and Cupid, relation of cupid and Mars and relation between Mars and Venus.
Q 4: yes there are many paintings in the book which I like but the most interesting and meaningful to me is the 'angelica saved by Ruggiero'. This painting shows the male and female roles because women always considered as a delicate and soft nature but man always portrayed as a masculine and powerful and that is what this painting is showing us. I see powerful man is saving women from a monster and a woman is thankful to a person who is saving her.
Q 5: Berger Used different images of same genre to show the main theme of the paintings. He shows that what connects them together. For example the paintings of different women from different times shows the role of women and depicts that how women is treated in a male dominant society.
Q 6: Berger Characterizes the women being portrayed as an object and he criticizes the way women are been portrayed either in ancient art or the modern publicity art. He considers women a person too and he wants other people to see what he sees and look what he looks. He thinks women are portrayed as a pleasure for a male spectator
