s are collected from the international and domestic economic core journals  from  July  2013  to  June  2014.  The  samples  of  the  international  journals  are selected  from  The  American  Economic  Review,  and  The  Economic  Journal  (shortly called AE) and the domestic ones from Economist and Economic Review (shortly called EE). With the comparative analysis of these English abstracts, we can find out the gaps and deficiencies of the domestic researchers and students in writing an English abstract, and  provide  some  suggestions  for  their  papers’  admission  to  the  international  core journals.  This  study  not  only  enriches  the  empirical  research  on  the  English  abstracts, but also provides a useful reference for abstract writing, teaching and convenience for researchers to master the latest abstract’s writing structure and linguistic characteristics.

Chapter Two Literature Review  

2.1 Overview 
At present, most official publications on the study of abstracts in the world can be traced back to the index and abstract of Cleveland. This paper holds that: An abstract is the core content generalized by a special knowledge and a true substitute of the article (Niu  Guiling  2013:150).  In  the  paper  Teaching  English  learners  to  extract  structural information from an abstract (Gratoz 1985), it shows that: an abstract is a time saving structure for readers who can find any part of the article without reading the whole text. The readers’ preview of the structure of the article can help to get a better and deeper understanding  of  the  text.  If  the  generation  of  the  abstract  is  comprehensive  enough, maybe it can replace the whole text. The national standard GB6447-1986 issued by the Chinese  government  has  also  made  such  a  definition:  abstract  is  such  a  small  text  to provide the general content of the thesis without comment and additional explanation, to narrate important content of the literature essays concisely and precisely. In addition, the journal 'ESP' is the magazine which mainly publishes ESP/EAP (English for specific purpose,  English  for  academic  purpose).  With  the  greatest  number  of  theses  about abstract research, it is also one of the most authoritative journals in the study of applied linguistics.

2.2 Different Studies of the Abstracts
