CHAPTER FOUR  STUDY OF THE E-C TRANSLATION OF COSMETIC INSTRUCTIONS  

The  materials  to  be  analyzed  are  cosmetic  instructions.  As  the  translation  of  them involves  two  cultures,  it  is  necessary  to  make  a  contrast  and  comparison  between  the English and the Chinese cosmetic instructions. When you understand the differences, you can  better  handle  them.  Then  the  principles  for  translating  cosmetic  instructions  are introduced  and  translation  methods  are  summarized  by  analyzing  a  large  number  of examples. Finally, the author applied the methods in the translation practice and they are proved to be practical.  

4.1 Introduction of Cosmetic Instructions

According to Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, “cosmetic” means “a substance that you put on your face or body to make it more attractive”. This definition is too vague and general.  A  more  specific  definition  is  proposed  by the Food  and  Drug Administration (FDA)  in  the  US,  which  defines  cosmetics  as  'intended  to  be  applied  to the  human  body  for  cleansing,  beautifying,  promoting  attractiveness,  or  altering  the appearance  without  affecting  the  body's  structure  or  functions. .  The  cosmetics  can  be classified into two groups, namely makeup types and skin care products.
