Hallidayproposes that interpersonal meaning is realized through the system of mood, modalityand key. To be specific, speakers establish and maintain relations with listeners mainlythrough the mood system. Besides, speakers express their attitudes on certainpropositions and proposals through the modality system. Later he points out that theperson system is also a useful system for the realization of personal meaning.Eggins and Slade (1997) adopt the systemic functional approach to investigatehow people use the system of mood and modality in their conversations. They analyzecasual talk and adopt the grammar of the casual conversation as a linguistic resourceto study interpersonal meaning. They point out that people’s social status,relationships with others, attitudes are reflected in their language. They conclude thatthe choice of mood types can help speaker build certain social status, and at the sametime reflect the social roles played by the speaker and listener. Eggins and Slade’sresearch shed some light on later study on interpersonal meaning in conversations.

2.2 Previous Studies on Interpersonal Meaning in Business Presentations
Product presentation belongs to business presentation. Studies on interpersonalmeaning in business presentations will shed some light on those of productpresentations. Foreign studies on interpersonal meaning in business presentations arerarely found. Chinese scholars make some researches on interpersonal meaning inbusiness presentations, which are closely related to the present research.Li Shufang (2009) conducts a cross-cultural study on business speeches. She basesher research on a combination of cross-cultural communication study and discourseanalysis. She discusses the differences existing in Chinese and English businesspresentations and seeks for reasons from a cultural perspective. Li also uses themodality system in her research to compare the differences existing in Chinese andEnglish business speeches, although the concept of interpersonal meaning is notmentioned and causes for the difference are not analyzed.Lin Kui(2012) conducts a research on the presentation style of Steve Jobs based on the appraisal theory. By taking Jobs’ presentation on Apple’s WorldwideDevelopers Conference in the year 2010 as an example, Lin Kui analyzes theevaluative resources of attitude, engagement and graduation used by Steve Jobs forbetter communication with audiences. In her research, Lin also summarizes Jobs’presentation styles and skills.
