The question arises of whether GCC is only forlarge companies, particularly multinational, orwhether it is also for small and medium size enterprises(SMEs) in a globalized competitive world? In
fact, many relate GCC with the former. But, whyshould this be so?
An increasing interest in studying social responsibilityof SMEs (included within GCC, as noted)has emerged in the last decade, and several articlesand books on this topic have been published (Spence2007). Most research in this field tries to identifywhat SMEs are doing regarding corporate socialresponsibility (CSR) through surveys or interviews
(Jenkins, 2006; Murillo and Lozano, 2006; Perriniet al., 2007; Simpson et al., 2004; Spence and
Schmidpeter, 2003) or by studying simple cases withspecial relevance (Castka et al., 2004; Enderle,
2004). Many findings report that SMEs are involvedin supporting some projects in their respective localcommunities. However, so far ‘the global space’ hasrarely been considered for small and medium size
enterprises.
