ABSTRACT. Global Corporate Citizenship (GCC)continues to become increasingly popular in large corporations.
However, this concept has rarely been consideredin small and medium size enterprises (SMEs). Acase study of a Norwegian clothing company illustrateshow GCC can be also applied to small companies. Thiscase study also shows that SMEs can be very innovative inexercising corporate citizenship, without necessarily followingthe patterns of large multinational companies. Thecompany studied engages as partner in some voluntarylabor initiatives promoted by the government, employspeople in marginal situations, and exerts influence for theadoption of good working conditions in its supply chain.Environmental issues and actions of solidarity are alsoconsidered within a global scope. Ethics of care andconcern for specific aspects of the common good seemcrucial as GCC drivers in this company, as do personalvalues, character, and leadership of the owner-manager ofthe firm.

Global Corporate Citizenship (GCC) continues tobecome increasingly popular in large corporations. Amilestone for introducing this concept took place inJanuary 2002, during the World Economic Forum inNew York, when 46 CEOs of the world’s largestmultinational corporations signed a document entitled‘‘Global Corporate Citizenship – the LeadershipChallenge for CEOs and Boards.’’1 It emphasizedthat business leadership processes focusing on thecompany’s impact on society and its relationshipswith stakeholders are not ‘add-ons’ but fundamentalto core business operations. Klaus Schwab, currentExecutive Chair of the World Economic Forum, clarified that ‘‘Global Corporate Citizenship goesbeyond the concepts of corporate philanthropy, including social investing; corporate social responsibility;and corporate social entrepreneurship in that
it entails focusing on ‘the global space,’ which isincreasingly shaped by forces beyond the control of
nation-states.’’ (2008, p. 114).
