Analyzing The Growth In India
Economics Essay
The recent high growth rate in the developing nations like India and China had led to some heated debate among economists. The well Indian economist Amit Bhaduri called the recent high growth rate as ‘Predatory Growth’. The growth rate in India is misleading due to some methodological issues in the calculation. This paper is an attempt to critically evaluate Amit Bhaduri’s arguments against the high growth rate and analyzing the reasons for the awful condition of the Indian poor. The main focus is to analyze the rationale and impacts of high growth. With the help of literature and official data, we can see that both government and private sector is responsible for the misery of Indian poor and the Indian Growth rate is over calculated using some inefficient methodologies.

Introduction
After three decades of sluggish growth of 3.5% per annum in the post independence period, economic growth in India accelerated significantly in the 1980’s.Furthermore during the mid nineties the economy grew by more than 7% per annum. This acceleration in economic growth was due to several factors including a modest trade liberalization and tax reform during 1980’s, an increase in public investment, better agriculture performance and an expansionist fiscal policy. In addition to the policy reforms of 1980’s, the new congress government of 1991 was forced to undertake wide ranging economic reforms in the face of balance of payment crisis in 1991.The reforms included external sector liberalization, deregulation of industry, reforms of
taxation and the financial sector and a more commercial approach to the public sector. Economic reforms picked up pace in 2000-04 and there has been a sharp acceleration in GDP growth to 8.5 percent plus since 2003/4. This has given rise to a vision of attaining even higher growth rates and connecting the group of ‘Asian Miracle’ economies. This has led to too many heated debates among Economists and they started naming it as ‘Jobless Growth’, Anti-Poor Growth, and Corporate led Growth and so on. But the most discussed term was ‘Predatory Growth’ by Amit Bhaduri. He first used the term in a commentary titled ‘Predatory Growth’ in Economic and Political Weekly,2008.In the commentary, he had concentrated on the recent high growth scenario and its impact on the equitable development process in our country. I have divided the paper into three parts.
