摘要:By making an analysis on these textbooks in the aspect ofvocabulary, the author wants to get some practical teaching instructions and suggestionsfor teachers in order to improve their teaching.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the research
The acquisition of second language vocabulary is of vital importance during theprocess of learning a second or a foreign language for all the learners. The importance ofsecond language vocabulary is to the second language learners what air is to the humanbeings. Just as the famous linguist Haimer puts it, if we refer to the grammar structure asthe skeleton of the language, we would like to think of the vocabulary as its inevitableorgans and flesh (Harmer, 1991). Celce-Murcia and Rosensweig (1979) cite in their bookthat it is more beneficial and advantageous for those who have a wide range of vocabularywhile grasping a minimum of sentence structures than those who pick up nearly all kindsof sentence structures while only owning a small size of vocabulary in the aspects of bothreading comprehension and essential communication. So,for second language learners, itis one of the basic parts for them to leam second language vocabulary in order to have abetter knowledge of any other parts of second language acquisition.

1.2 Significance of the research
By doing such research, the author is willing to realize the following goals afteracquiring results: The author wants to judge whether the textbook vocabulary is good for students toacquire second language vocabulary in the aspects of the word number, the worddistribution and the word frequency. In this research, the author wants to answer thefollowing three questions; a) how large is the vocabulary size in the textbookscompared with the three word lists in Range respectively; b) do all the present wordshave a average distribution in every textbook; c) How about the situation of thedistribution of both high-frequency words and the low-frequency words accroding toRange. By answering the previous three questions, the author will make a close studyof the textbook vocabulary in a fairly detailed way and better know the textbookvocabulary in every textbook. Due to the current situation that students, especially in Nanjing,Jiangsu Province, haveused their new version of English textbooks, the author wants to make a comparisonbetween the old version and the new one of their English textbooks—3A and 7A inorder to have a better knowledge from the vocabulary perspective. By doing suchcomparison, we can easily weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the new versionof the textbooks to make specialists and teachers compile and use the textbooks in abetter way. According to the former research results,the author hopes to give some suggestionsand advice for the textbook compiling in the vocabulary aspect in order to maketextbook vocabulary more suitable for second language learners to use and make thembetter grasp the second language vocabulary.
