Chapter One Introduction
1.1. Research background
In the field of SLA, there is no denying the fact that lexis is of great importanceto language learners and it is one of the most crucial aspects of mastering a language, which is regarded as the building blocks for language use. Just as McCarthy says that“No matter how well the student learns grammar, no matter how successfully thesounds of L2 are mastered, without words to express a wide range of meanings;communication in an L2 just cannot happen in any meaningful way” (1990, pp. viii) .Therefore, lexis is the foundation of 1anguage construction and it is necessary to havea good command of vocabulary.Within the scope of vocabulary research, word combinations have aroused greatinterests of linguists in recent years. Erman and Warren(2000) claim that the averageproportion of phraseological expressions in their analyzed texts is 55.38%, of which58.6% is in spoken text and 52.3% in written text. Meanwhile, the prefabricatedlanguage occupies 38.8% in spoken text and 71.5% in written text. Therefore, wordcombinations play a significant role in language use, which can facilitate bothlanguage production and comprehension. As an essential subcategory of word combinations, collocations are widelystudied and have been under the spotlight as one of particular areas in vocabularyresearch for many years. The relationship between vocabulary and collocation can beillustrated by McCarthy, who holds that “the relationship of collocation isfundamental in the study of vocabulary; it is a marriage contract between words… Itis an important organizing principle in the vocabulary of any language” (1990, pp.12).

1.2. Significance of the study
According to Pu (2003), the cornerstone of vocabulary teaching lies in the wordchunking, especially collocations. Kjellmer (1991) argues that “automation ofcollocations” helps language learners to utter sentences more fluently, which means iflearners are deficient in automation process, they will have to create structures andbecome less fluent when speaking. Thus, it is of vital importance to build upcollocation competence in SLA.The present study aims to explore Chinese EFL learners’ collocation competenceand take an in-depth look at the influence of LI transfer on the acquisition ofverb-noun collocation among learners of different L2 proficiency. Thus the researchfindings will provide some implications for the way collocations have been taught inChinese EFL settings and be beneficial for researchers who want to do furtherresearch in this field.

Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Study of language transfer
It is generally acknowledged that EFL learners often “transfer” some elements oftheir mother tongue to the target language when they attempt to communicate insecond language, such as, “*the right side face”, “*learn knowledge” etc. frequentlyoccur in Chinese learners’ oral or written English. In order to have a clear view oflanguage transfer, more information has been discussed. Gass defines language transfer as “a subset of this more general process, incorporating the view that patterns of the native language (of all levels of linguisticstructure), including both forms and functions of elements are superimposed on thepatterns learned in a second本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
