Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
It is acknowledged that pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary are major elements oflanguage, of which vocabulary is the most important. The well-known linguist Allen (1972)claims no matter what target language is, vocabulary is the essential element in all languageteaching. The more vocabulary a person masters, the higher accuracy of reading is. Besides,the capabilities of listening, speaking and writing will be improved. In terms of the learners,the importance of vocabulary is beyond doubt in the whole process of learning English.Vocabulary is the carrier of phonetics and grammar, which is also the most basic material oflanguage. Vocabulary has close connection with language. Without vocabulary, any languagecan’t be well organized. In terms of the teachers, vocabulary teaching is indispensable inforeign language teaching in that it is throughout the whole process of learning language. Ifnot mastering certain amount of words, learners will find it difficult to listen, speak, read andwrite effectively so that it will directly affect the application and development of Englishability. Therefore, vocabulary learning is the key to learning English.What is the status of vocabulary knowledge at the stage of elementary educationespecially in the junior high school?

1.2 Purpose of the Study
The current study is designed to investigate the current situation of English vocabularyteaching in junior high school through questionnaires, interview, test and textbook analysis.Combining with the textbook Go for it!, the author aims to explore what the current situationof English vocabulary teaching and learning is in junior high school, how the vocabulary isinput in the textbook Go for it! and what the correlation between English vocabulary size andEnglish overall ability and the correlation between English vocabulary competence andEnglish overall ability of students in junior high school are. Finally, the author will also putforward some suggestions to English vocabulary teaching and learning. The results of thisstudy may be beneficial to English learners and provide Reference for English teachers toimprove their vocabulary teaching. The results and arguments of this thesis produce important significance to Englishvocabulary teaching and provide a new clue to the further study of learners’ languageacquisition.First of all, in the previous studies, most researchers carry out the study from singleperspective such as vocabulary teaching methods, teaching strategies and problems existing invocabulary teaching while the author makes comprehensive and objective analyses on thecurrent situation of English vocabulary teaching and learning in junior high school combiningwith the present textbook Go for it! so as to propose reasonable suggestions for Englishvocabulary teaching.
