Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the Present Study
Textbooks are of significant importance in language teaching. It is a tool thatconnects teachers, students and knowledge. A textbook reflects the content and aim ofteaching, and teachers use it to carry out effective teaching activities. A good textbookcan not only help teachers organize their teaching activities, but also help learnersacquire knowledge and establish their own knowledge system. An English textbookreflects the textbook writers’ views on English learning and their understanding ofcourse curriculum. A good English textbook can meet the need of English learners,improve their ability of language use, and also raise their interest of English learning.On the contrary, a low-quality textbook acts the opposite way.With the rapid development of economy, society and culture, English educationhas been paid more and more attention. As a result, large quantities of Englishtextbooks appear with uneven quality. Since nothing can have a greater influence onthe content of language teaching and learning than the textbooks, it is extremelyimportant to adopt the appropriate and good-quality teaching materials. However, itbecomes more difficult to choose a proper textbook with the increasing publish oftextbook. It is necessary to establish a textbook evaluation system. Related researchon textbook evaluation abroad has achieved abundant achievement. European andAmerican countries have been conducting the theoretical research of materialevaluation since the beginning of the 20thcentury.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Present Study
Considering the importance of vocabulary in students’ study and critical role thattextbooks play in vocabulary learning, this thesis aims to evaluate the five senior Highschool textbooks, particularyly focusing on the coverage of base words and word frequency.On the one hand, the researcher explores the base words which are covered in thetextbooks through powerful corpus-based evaluation system. On the other hand, thestudy expects to reveal the word frequency in the five senior high school textbooks.Since the students need enough repetition and reinforcement of the words within alimited and proper time period, the researcher will study the frequency of the chosenwords to find out whether there is enough lexical repetition, as well as the repetitioninterval of the chosen words to see whether there is enough repetition within propertime.Because of the important role of vocabulary researchers and textbook designersand compilers tend to pay more attention to the selection and arrangement ofvocabulary in the textbooks. It requires educators and researchers to make a properevaluation system for vocabulary in textbooks. With the help of corpus, the studyaims to propose a new approach to systematic evaluation of vocabulary in textbooks.The researcher expects to propose some suggestions for the vocabulary arrangementfor textbook compilation as well as teachers to adapt a suitable and better textbook forstudents.
