;Intentional  vocabulary  learning meant  the  vocabulary  is  learned  deliberately  by  learners  through  reciting,  memorizing  vocabulary  list  or doing  lexical  exercises,  which  put  learning  new  words  as  their  primary  task.  However,  incidental vocabulary acquisition indicated when students were doing other tasks, for instance, reading or listening or communicating,  whose  attention  was  not  pay  to  learning  words,  and  the  unknown  word  just  acquired unconsciously.  Ellis  (1994)  stressed  that  the  in  the  process  of  IVA,  attention  is  also  needed,  but  it  is different  from  intentional  learning  with  conscious  attention.  Just  like  Schmidt,  Joe  (1998)  mentioned  that incidental  or  indirect  vocabulary  acquisition  happens  when  learners  put  their  mind  in  understanding  the context not lexical, which is an effective way to acquire vocabulary.

2.2 Studies about Glosses and Its Influence on Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition in Reading
Nation  (2001)  put  forward  four  reasons  to  certify  the  advantages  of  glossing.  First,  learners  can understand  difficult  reading  materials  without  simplification  or  adaptation.  Second,  glosses  can  avoid learners  guessing  incorrectly  due  to  text’s  insufficient  information  and  their  lower  language  proficiency, and thus contribute to their vocabulary acquisition. Third, giving glosses is more time-saving compared to referring to the dictionary. Fourth, glosses may attract learners’ attention when they come across unknown words  and  tend  to  ignore  them.  What’  more,  glossing  is  learners’  preference  and  it  meets  their  need  for vocabulary  assistance.  Hence,  glosses  are  beneficial  for  second  language  learners’  vocabulary  acquisition and retention.
