Conclusion

After analyzing all the available data and getting the relevant results, in this chapter the researcherpresented the major findings of this study and summarized the pedagogical implications in this study.Besides, the researcher also found out the limitations of this study and gave us some suggestions forfurther study.In the previous chapter, we have concluded that semantic mapping employed by the experimentalclass was a more effective strategy than the rote memorization used in the control class. And from theresults the three major findings can be drawn out as follows.Semantic mapping strategy enlarges students’ vocabulary sizeThe traditional vocabulary learning method, rote memorization, needed to expend students a greatamount of time and effort to remember words, but as a result, they forgot those words fast. How toremember words quickly and deeply has been a hard nut to crack for most students. From the result of thepre-test and post test in the control class, the vocabulary size of the students was only increased a littlebefore and after the experiment. Therefore, vocabulary rote memorization could not help students to learnvocabulary effectively.However, the students in the experimental class associated new words with their known ones byconstructing some vivid semantic maps. During the process of building maps, the students tried their bestto brainstorm words related to a central word, which was conducive to deepening their cognitiveunderstanding for those words. In turn, it could strengthen the effect of the students’ vocabularymemorization. The result of the post tests in the two class showed that there was a significant differencebetween the mean sores of their vocabulary size. In addition, the mean difference of the post tests betweenthe experiment class and control class was about 2.70, which means the students of the experimental classknew 270 words more than those of the control class. Obviously, semantic mapping strategy indeedenlarged students’ vocabulary size greatly.
