The growth of Entrepreneurship in China has been phenomenal since  the open-door policy in 1978.   Small-  and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have  increasingly played  an  important role in the Chinese economy, accounting for about 50 percent of the total GDP in 2001.
Nonetheless, a  few studies have  examined what counts for  such  rapid growth of entrepreneurship in China. This study focuses on identifying environmental factors relatedto the success and failure of entrepreneurship in China. Based on a survey of 117 SME
executives in Sichuan province, the survey results show that positive social acceptance,risk-taking attitudes and  infrastructure adequacy were perceived as most facilitating factors,while market development and exploitation, and adopting low cost strategy were successfactors. The results also reveal that  lack of capital and over-competition within  the industrywas the key reasons for SME failures.

I. Introduction
Entrepreneurship study still remains at the theory-building stage (Wiseman and Skilton,1999). A  recent review of  fifteen years (1985-1999) of publication  in  the  leading managementjournals resulted only 1.8 percent of articles in entrepreneurship (Busenitz et al., 2003),
indicating the lack of entrepreneurship studies. This study attempts to add the growingliterature in this  knowledge domain by presenting some preliminary findings of
entrepreneurship growth in China.  Following the assertions of Shane and Venkataraman

(2000) that entrepreneurship can not be explained solely by traits of individuals and thatthe entrepreneurial behavior of individuals reflect  their responses to the situational cues ofopportunities, we focus our discussion on the environmental factors for the growth of
entrepreneurship in China. We focus on these factorsbecause “entrepreneurship  seeks tounderstand how opportunities that manifest  future goods and services are discovered,created and  exploited” (Venkataraman, 1997), and the opportunities released by the
environmental changes present information about availability and value of resources.Environmental factors make up  the context within which  the entrepreneurial  process  stylizedas autonomy, innovativeness, risk taking, proactiveness, and competitive aggressivenesstakes place (Lumpkin and Dess, 1996).

Our focus on China entrepreneurship also  results from the dynamic growth andincreasing role played by entrepreneurial activities in the overall Chinese economy overthe past twenty years. According to statistics in 2002, among all the registered enterprisesin China, 99 percent of them are SMEs. The SMEs realizes 74 percent of industrial  sales withless than half of assets (48.2 percent) of all industrial assets of China (Xin Hua Agency,2002) .

II. Brief history of Entrepreneurship in China
