PURPOSE
The purpose of assignment 1 is twofold; firstly, to describe and analyze the effects of a human
impact on the environment (the analysis will highlight impacts on the physical environment, the
biological environment and the social environment); secondly, to consider the links or interactions
between the single human impact and the physical, biological and social environments. This
assignment will illustrate the magnitude of human impacts on the environment.
TOPIC GUIDELINES
Find a newspaper article that describes a human activity or event that is clearly impacting on the
environment. Examples include oil spills, depletion of commercial fish, destruction of forests and so
on...
The article must appear in one of the newspapers listed below. Note that all of these newspapers are
available for your perusal in the McLaughlin Library. The article must be chosen from between January
1, 2011 - January 15, 2012.

Be certain to include the geographical dimensions of the activity or event of concern. For example,
where is the impact occurring presently and/or where might it occur in the future (give the spatial
dimensions of the impact)? How long has the impact been occurring or how long is it likely to occur
