Analysis of EU identity Construction in European integration from Constructivist’s approach

Introduction
European integration is the world's highest level of integration, which plays an exemplary role for the rest of the world.  European integration is the twentieth century's greatest historical events in human society. It not only promotes the development of European unity and, may also represent the future direction of development of human society. So from the beginning of European integration, there are numerous scholars trying to explain the formation European integration. Theories of European integration in general have experienced functionalism, neo-functionalism, intergovernmental approach and social constructivism. The traditional theories are facing difficulties to explain enlarging of EU integratioin. The paper here analyzed EU identity construction in European integration from constructivist’s approach. By analyzing literature, the study is expected to get a framework of role of EU identity construction in European integration.

This paper is mainly consisted of four sections. The first part proposed the main theme of this study, which is the relation between European identity and European integration. And theoretical and practical significance of research topic is demonstrated in the first part. The main difficulties to interpret European integration in the mainstream theories, such as intergovernmental governance theory, are also discussed in the first part. Comparing the mainstream theories explaining European integration, the paper is to discuss social constructivism and European integration in the second part. The second part of the study describes the basic knowledge of constructivist theory and its benefits to European integration. The third part discusses EU identity, which plays a role as potential drive of European integration and specifically defines the concept of identity. Finally the paper draws a conclusion that EU identity as a collective identity will drive further development of European integration.

The paper has traced theories about European integration and EU identity. Comparing to main theories about drives of European integration and relation between European integration and EU identity, constructivist’s theory has it advantages. Firstly, constructivism takes European integration as the formation of a new regime. Secondly, constructivism understands European integration from the social perspective, providing a new way of thinking for the interpretation and analysis of European integration.
