Property is one’s legal right to exclude others from various resources due to the ownership of those resources. Music producers consider their music their property and protect them from public use and public download.

Legal regulation as a source of value for business ethics 
When downloading music online, there is a thin line between what is ethical and what is legal. Transferring of music downloaded from a website, even if paid for, can be unethical. At the same time, it can be considered illegal practice. For example, if I download a song from the internet and pay five dollars for that download. Is it ethical for me to make a copy of that song for my best friend? Some might consider it unethical since that friend did not pay for the music. If I consider it ethical, can I also make 50 copies for all my friends and family members? This act is definitely unethical but is probably also illegal. “The way to understand the ethical-legal relationship is to realize that in our society ethical values frequently become law and that legal regulation can reflect society's ethical values” (Reed et al, 2005). 
Online music is protected by several laws, with copyright laws being one of them. Therefore, it is important to know that legal regulation is a significant source of values for business ethics. 
When applying the code of ethics, one can draw the following from legal regulation: 
• “Respect for the liberty and rights of others 
• The importance of acting in good faith 
• The importance of exercising due care 
• The importance of honoring confidentiality 
• Avoidance of conflicts of interest” (Reed et al, 2005). 
“Insider trading, bribery, fraudulent practices, and conflicts of interest are often cited as examples of ethical failures. But these practices are illegal as well. That the unethical may be illegal and vice versa is often confusing to students” (Reed et al, 2005). 
Rules of Contract 
When downloading music online, one is getting involved in the rules of contract. Acquiring resources require some form of exchange and the downloading of music online requires an exchange of one’s own money in order to acquire certain songs.
