Introduction  引言


In this paper, I intend to explore the topic of “leadership development: emotion quotient (EQ)”, with the case study from Sales Engineering Division of DGL International and John Terrill, the manager takes office nearly of the division. The analysis will be arranged in three parts, I will state the basic conception of EQ and the criterions to judge whether a person or leader is high EQ level in part 1, and then analyze whether John Terrill has or has not demonstrated EI and to what extent he show EI in the leadership in part 2, and in part 3, I will make a brief conclusion related with EQ and enterprise management based on the analysis.

What is EQ and how to be high EQ level person?
On the “New York Times” in 1995, Goodman Daniel, a famous science special column writer, brought the concept of “emotion quotient (EQ)” for the first time, which imposes great influence on the management science, sociology, anthropology and psychology. The core conception in the EQ is that society always attaches excessive importance on the factor of intelligence (IQ) when evaluating the reasons for one’s success or failure, ignoring the importance of EQ. However, apart from IQ, EQ also plays critical role in the process when we are looking after the success of career and other aspects in our life(Ashforth & Humphrey, 1995). On the other hand, EQ is still one of deciding factors to judge whether you are suitable to be the leader, the managers with relatively low EQ always can’t control and drive the company (Cooper & Sawaf, 1997).
 什么是EQ和如何成为高情商水平的人? 
1995年的“纽约时报”,丹尼尔·古德曼,一个著名的科学专栏的作家,第一次带来了“情绪商数(EQ)”的概念,这在管理学,社会学,人类学,心理学上有很大的影响。EQ的核心理念是,社会一直在评估一个人的成功或失败的原因的时候,忽略了情商的重要性,重视智力(IQ)的因素过多。然而,除了智商,情商在这个过程中也起着至关重要的作用,当我们正在寻找事业成功后在生活其他方面的时候(阿什福思&汉弗莱,1995)。另一方面,EQ是仍然是判断你是否适合成为领导者的因素之一,具有相对较低的EQ管理者总是无法控制和推动公司的发展(库珀&斯沃夫,1997)。

There are five factors embodied in the conception of EQ, they are Self Awareness, Self Management/control, Self Motivation, Empathy and Social Skills (Goleman, 1995, Mayer & Salovey, 1997). We could judge whether a person is high level EQ or low level. As for Self Awareness, it refers to the capability to be well acquainted with one self’s mood, character and style. Of course, the self awareness is not the same with “arrogance”, because the self awareness here is built on the basis of confidence and being learned. In terms of Self Management, it means that the person who has higher EQ could control his or her emotion and calm down easily after his or her sentiment breaks out suddenly. The third factor of EQ is Self Motivation, which requires people to hold the spirit to go forward when they faced with difficulties and make self stimulation in different environment. The leaders who bear higher EQ are the ones who never say give up even they are encountered with temporary failures.
