1.3.1 Introduction
In this section a brief description is made about the composite materials in general. This section makes emphasis on the material that is going to be used as the specimen for the testing. A brief explanation about the testing of the composites generally the in-plane shear tests was described in this section. The main aim of the project was also described. The objectives are mentioned and are followed during the project. The following chapters explain in depth about the composite materials and testing methods in detail.
1.3.2 Literature review
The main purpose of inclusion of this section in this report is to shed light on describing the composite materials, its constituents and properties. Here glass fibre reinforced plastic is described in detail. Various types of GFR are mentioned. The manufacturing of composites is also described in this section. The in-plane shear testing method is explained in detail. Various types of in-plane shear test methods are explained briefly. Emphasis is made on the two rail shear test, which is used in this project for the determination of in-plane shear properties of glass fibre.
1.3.3 Theory
Stress and strain are defined and equations are formulated. The general equation used for the in-plane shear is obtained from the ASTM standard. The equations obtained are used for the calculation purpose later in the project. The derivation of the equation which governs the two rail shear test is described in this section. In the following chapter the apparatus required for the manufacture of the specimen is discussed.
1.3.4 Apparatus
For every experiment to be done, tools are required. For this project the test fixture is manufactured in the University laboratory using standard equipment. And the test fixture dimensions are explained in this section. The dimensions follow the ASTM standard. Tools are also required for the manufacture of the specimen. The tools required for the manufacturing of the specimen as mentioned in the objectives were described and labelled in appendix. In similar way the equipment required for the testing of the specimen is described and labelled in appendix. The tools used for the strain gauge analysis is also mentioned in this section and is described in detail. The following section describes about the manufacturing and experimental procedure.
1.3.5 Manufacturing and Experimental Procedure
Using the tools mentioned in the above section, the manufacturing of the specimen is explained in this section. The specimen is manufactured and is machined to the required dimensions, and is explained in this section. The experimental procedure for the tests is explained in detail. The strain gauge analysis is also explained in this section. In the following sections, the results are tabulated, discussed and conclusions are made. Based on the conclusions, suitable future recommendations are made.
1.3.6 Results and Calculations
The results obtained from the experiment are tabulated. The tabulated results are then substituted in the equations obtained from the theory. From the results obtained after substitution in equations, discussions are made on the properties of the material under applied load, and a proper conclusion is made from the discussion.
