Abstract
Cochlear Pharmacology and Noise Trauma: Prevention and Progress—a joint symposium organized by The Novartis Foundation and the European Commission Concerted Action Protection Against Noise2
The Novartis Foundation, London, UK, 1–2 May 19983
Keywords: noise-induced hearing loss ; free-radical scavenger; heat shock protein; neurotrophic factor
Article Outline
1. Molecular players in cochlear neurons
2. Molecular mechanisms of acoustic damage
3. Prevention of noise-induced hearing loss
4. Treatment of noise-induced hearing loss
5. Future directions
Noise pollution is the world's third-most-serious environmental issue after air and water pollution. Industrial noise, military noise, traffic noise, loud music and a whole host of other pollutants of the peace mean that between 400 and 500 million people worldwide have some degree of hearing impairment caused by noise damage to the ear. Indeed, occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the largest single compensatable illness in world.
Intense sound exposure damages the hair cells of the ear and destroys the dendrites of the primary auditory neurons. This can produce a hearing loss of more than 60 decibels, known as a temporary threshold shift (TTS), that may or may not recover over time. The recovery process is rapid at first but slows down after a few days. Between 2 and 25 days after acoustic trauma, the threshold shift can become permanent (PTS).

2 PAN Is a 3 year long European-wide research, awareness and educational initiative bringing together scientific, medical and technical experts from 37 groups in 17 countries to advance scientific knowledge and improve the health protection of workers. It is scheduled to end in April 1999.
3 The proceedings (papers and edited discussions) of this symposium will be published in autumn 1998 by the Noise Research Network, National Institute of Otology and Laryngology, Grays Inn Rd, London, UK.
