In New Zealand, the Nursing Council sets standards and provides
guidelines of the Direction and Delegation for registered nurses. The purpose of the guideline is to guiding the registered nurses to direct and monitor, or make delegation
assignments to the health assistants. The registered nurses must grasp the knowledge and skills to undertake direction and delegation activities in nursing practice. This
essay will present a discussion on firstly how the direction and delegation relate to the professional practice of registered nurses in New Zealand, and second, what these guidelines impact on my clinical practice (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2012).
Direction means direct or indirect monitoring and evaluating the nursing tasks performed by nursing assistants. Delegation means transferring responsibility of health care activities to other person and retaining the accountability. The Nursing Council sets a definition of the registered nurse scope of clinical practice for direction and delegation. The registered nurses should practice within their own scope, and understand the boundaries, professional skills, responsibility and accountability of the direction and delegation activities(Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2010).
Making decision of direction and delegation is the first part of the scope of practice. As the registered nurses, we have to develop the knowledge and skills during clinical practice for professional judgments (Potter et al., 2010).Every organizational direction and delegation task could be developed with participation of the registered nurses and other employees, like enrolled nurses orhealth assistants. The registered nurses have toarrange everyone’s role and make the decision to delegate. There are several detailed principles described in the guidelines for the registered nurses to take in account before making the decision in the clinical practice. (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2012)
First, as the registered nurses, we should determine whether direction and delegation should perform or not according to our professional knowledge and skills (Gravlin& Bittner, 2010). The decisions should be made based on the health status of the health consumers, complexity of the health condition, and context of the nursing works and the willing of the health consumers (Mitty et al., 2010). The healthcare delegation can only be taken when legally permitted (Quallich, 2005). Registered nurses have the responsibility to ensure the legalityof the delegation in profession practice.
Once the delegation is determined, the registered nurses have to choose the most suitable nursing assistants based on their scope of practice, direction/delegation policies and communication systems to fulfill the delegation (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2012).The delegated nursing assistants should have great time managementand appropriate healthcare skillsfor the health consumers (Weatherspoon, 2013).
In order to reducing the risk of delegation, the registered nurses who delegate the nursing activities should have responsibilities and accountabilities to direct and monitor the nursing assistants during the health care (Thomas, 2010). For ex
