Optically Rewritable Reflective Liquid Crystal Display

Abstract
This 美国留学生光学应用论文 work presents a photo-addressable reflective bitable liquid crystal display. The mechanism is based on the laser-induced adsorption of ago-dyes on the polymer-coated glass substrate. This reflective liquid crystal display is very simple to fabricate and can be optically written, erased and re-written with a high contrast. A simulation is performed to fit the measured electro optical characteristics of this device.

1.Introduction
Bitable reflective displays have been studied widely over recent years. [1, 2] Some products, such as smart cards, e-books and others are currently available. For instance, SiPix employs an external electrical field to control the electrophoresis particles, which can provide bright and dark states. Kent Display Inc. uses polymer-wall stabilized cholesterol liquid crystal to display white (planar) and dark (focal conic) states. Fuji Xerox also demonstrates photo-addressable electronic paper using thebistable characteristics of cholesterol liquid crystals. [3, 4] This work reports a bitable reflective liquid crystal display (LCD) based on ago dye-doped liquid crystal (DDLC), and its bright/dark states can be switched optically.
The photo induced adsorption of ago dyes doped in an LC cell is an interesting mechanism by which LCs [5-9] are aligned in regular LC cell and a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) [10] system. When a linearly polarized light irradiates addle cell, the ago dyes (such as methyl red) undergo trans–cisisomerization, molecular reorientation and diffusion; they are finally adsorbed onto the substrate surface [5-10]. The adsorbed dyes then reorient the LC molecules. The adsorption can be accelerated using a polymer surface (such as NOA81) [11]. This work demonstrates a photo-switchable bitable reflective liquid crystal display (PRLCD) which can be written, erased and rewritten by changing the polarization of a writing laser beam.

Experimental
The LC and ago dye used in the experiment conducted herein were E7 (Merck) and Methyl Red (MR, purchased from Aldrich), respectively. The mixing ratio, MR: E7, of these two components was 1:99 wt%. Two indium-tin-oxides (ITO) -coated glass slides, separated by 6um spacers, were used to fabricate an empty cell. One of the two substrates was coated with a polyimide film, a drubbed to promote the homogeneous alignment of liquid crystals; the other was spin-coated using a pre-polymer (NOA81), and irradiated using a non-polarized UV light (~30 maw/cm2) to be polymerized. The homogeneously mixed compound was then injected into the empty cell to produce a dye-doped LC sample. The homogeneous alignment was confirmed using a ceroscopy.
Figure 1 presents the fabrication of this device. It contains polarizer, which is laminated onto the front substrate (rubbed polyimide side) of the DDLC film; the transmission axis of the polarizer is perpendicular to LC directors. A quarter-wave plate (QWP) and a transflective mirror (TRM) are laminated on the back (polymer-coated side) of the DDLC film. The angle between the LC directors and the optical axis of the QWP, Φ, is 45°.
