e approach and a range of new technologies, CALL now includes highly interactive and communicative support for listening, speaking, reading and writing, including extensive use of multimedia CD-ROMs and the Internet, An alternative term to CALI emerged in the late 1980s, namely Technology Enhanced language Learning (TELL),which was thought to provide a more accurate description of the activities which fall broadly within the range of CALI. Brown (1988:6) writes:
“Learning a foreign language can enrich the education of every pupil socially and intellectually and be vocationally relevant. The new technology should form an integral part of a modern language department’s overall teaching strategy. By these means, to coin a communicative sounding acronym, TELL can help produce telling results in language performance both in school and in the wider world. It therefore has a place in every modern language department.”
The wealth of information provided on the web affords language teachers and learners access to resources like never before. Online journals, listed services, newspapers, and magazines provide authentic material for language learners while the researching capabilities of the Web assist teachers in study and practice. The Word Wide Web offers enormous potential for accessible, interactive, high-quality and cost-effective modes of teaching and learning. The medium is of particular interest for the teaching and learning of languages because of the communicative possibilities of the new technologies. On the other hand, according to Maslow theory , “intrinsic motivation is clearly superior to extrinsic”(Maslow,1970).Teaching material used should be relevant and interesting to students so that they may learn more and get satisfaction from learning, taste the happiness of success and build up confidence(Xue Changxue, Yu Jianping, 2005).This definitely leads to increased intrinsic motivation.
The term WEL (web-enhanced Language), therefore, has been drawing more and more attention and interest from language instructors and learners. What makes the Web especially exciting as a resource for language teaching and learning is its possibilities for interactivity. Online language tutorials, exercises, and test are available to anyone who has access to the Web; web-based materials can be updated and distributed easily and quickly, and feedback for many activities is instantaneous.
Whereas CALI has traditionally been associated with self-contained, programmed applications such as tutorials, drills, simulations, instructional games, tests and so on, WEL represents a new and different side to the new named CALL, where human to human communication is the focus
1.3. The present situation of Computer Assisted in Language Learning in GZUN.
GZUN, like many other universities, also has equipped a lot of multi-media technological equipment. In 2006, the new equipment which consisted of personal computers with DVD ROMs, 4 louder speakers, big screen projectors, DVD players and the panel projectors replaced the older equipment. The biggest difference is all the computers can receive the Internet connection. To date, March of 2008, GZUN has already installed 73 multi-media classrooms. There are about one hundred seats in each multi-media room, and they are managed by the academic departments. The school of foreign languages uses the facility for offering theory courses to students. We can see the utilization of the multi-media classroom论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
