Abstract
This study,based on a questionnaire survey of 638 subjects from different Chineseuniversities,which is supported by interviews and observations,describes the generalfeatures of strategy use in the learning of English speaking and in actual English speakingby Chinese college English learners.
The study has found the generally preferred andignored speaking strategies in the English speaking learning process and has discovered 7types of strategy using styles and 5 clusters of strategy users during speaking English as aforeign language.Seven factors are found and they represent seven types of speakingstrategy using.After a careful study of the seven factors,the researcher has created a newlabel for each of them:(1)self-controlling learners;
(2)bold communicators;(3)concentrators;(4)guessing geniuses;(5)conscious learners;(6)prepared learners;and(7)error watchers.Then five clusters of different combinations of these seven factors areaggregated.They reflect specifically five styles of during-speaking strategy use so they arediscussed for a thorough understanding of Chinese college students’use of Englishspeaking strategies.The study has also discussed the possible correlations between Englishspeaking strategy choice and some possibly influential language learning factors such asoral English proficiency,self-evaluation of oral English level,age,gender,and length oftime spent on learning English speaking.
The relationship between English speakingstrategy use and oral English proficiency is studied and 9 strongly predicative strategieshave been found.The study on the relationship between speaking strategy use andself-evaluation of oral English learning aptitude is significantly negative,and therelationships between oral English strategy use and length of time spent on Englishlearning,gender and age are not correlated.
The reliability of the research is carried out bya split-half reliability test,which indicates that the research is reliable.The reliability testresult is also supported by the Cronbach’s alpha.Analysis of the data collected can provide awareness for teachers and learners alike aboutwhat strategies are used most and what are used least by Chinese college students,andtentative suggestions for educators to include English speaking strategy training in oral English classrooms are made.

This study is a small step forward in the understanding of foreign language learners’speaking strategies,for the description of Chinese college learners’English speakingstrategy use can provide information not only about Chinese college students’patterns ofusing English speaking strategies,but also about the present situation of Chinese collegeteaching and learning of English speaking as a foreign language.It is the author’s sincerehope that this study can serve as a reference for college English curriculum designers inChina in the designing of curricula and teaching materials,and training teachers.Keywords:learner strategy;EFL speaking;Chinese college English learners


摘要
本研究以638名来自不同中国大学、不同专业的英语学习者为研究对象,通过使用问卷调查、访谈和观察的研究方法,研究了中国大学生英语口语学习策略和英语口语使用策略的特点。本研究着重研究了中国大学生英语口语学习过程中,如:交谈前、交谈中、交谈后用于学习和用于交流的策略类型以及使用频度,并且通过对问卷反馈的信息进行统计,发现了中国大学生英语口语使用策略的7大特点即:(1)自控策略,(2)勇敢交际策略,(3)专注策略,(4)猜测策略,(5)清醒学习者策略,(6)提前准备策略,和(7)警惕错误策略;并且分析了在这7种英语口语使用策略方面各具特色的5种英语口语学习者的类型。
