 2.2.3. Textbook.
Human beings can create pressure, some objective things too. Textbook as one of the most important intensities in the classroom can be a use tool in language teaching and learning improvement, and meantime it is one of the factors that may influence teaching and learning5. In some special condition, the university has not enough books for all the students. Only the teacher has the textbook. To the students it is not a good thing, because they don’t know what they will learn and what the text talks about before the teacher teaches them. They cannot do the pre-work. Without the textbook it is difficult for the students to follow the teacher’s instruction in class. They are deprived more seriously; also the opportunities to revise what they are supposed to have learned in class are taken away. This will make students feel that study is not so easy. More or less, students will be pressured. On the other hand, this kind of pressure may make students listen carefully in class, because they know that they have only one chance to listen to the teacher. Otherwise they might risk failing in exam or fail to study in the course.
Some textbooks are very easy to understand. Sometimes the textbook goes with the figures or pictures to give further explanations. Teachers need not explain a lot about the text, for it is already described detailed and clearly. In this way, the students will feel comfortable with the books, but some of them do not care about the class at all. Maybe they think that they can deal with the whole text themselves after class. There is not any need for them to come to the classroom or listen to the teacher at all. Although the students feel very easy and have no pressure here, a big influence arises in language teaching. The teacher has no cooperation in class and no one likes listening to him or her. But most of the students will fully use the textbooks. They receive knowledge not only from the textbooks but also from the teachers, because teachers are another kind of resource in studying. If the textbooks are very difficult to understand, students will feel puzzled and spend much energy and time on that. It also depends on the teachers. It is good if the teacher teaches the students very clearly, and the students can understand the textbooks after class. But if the situation is opposite, what will happen? --- The pessimistic emotion will come out and a bad influence will be produced. So pressure will naturally work again.
To solve the problem the language teacher will have to play an important role in the evaluation and selection of textbooks just as Hutchinson says that all teachers should become experts as how to select textbooks, the decision of how to design and construct the teaching materials in teaching. It seems that all these, instead of being based on the teachers’ personal interests, should be based on the teachers’ assessment of the students - their aims of learning, their learning experiences, and the present situation in which they are learning, their likes etc, since the students are the center of language teaching and the more important consumers of textbooks.
