摘要:In the field of cognitive linguistics, researches about cognitive metaphor have been made bymany researches, especially for the conceptual metaphor and its influence on the second languageteaching. However, there is a lack of making a research to investigate the metaphor use of Chinesecollege students in China. Although this research has existed aboard, its enlightenment and instructionis limited for Chinese college students. Therefore, this study regards Chinese college students as thesubjects in order to expose the condition and the features of their metaphor use in the process ofwriting. It is a combination of quantitative and qualitative research on the metaphor use of Chinesecollege students.

Chapter I Introduction

 

This chapter comprises of three parts. First, an introduction to the background for the study on theuse of Chinese college students’ metaphoric study is illustrated. Second, the significance of the study ispresented. And third, the organization of the thesis is offered.The study analyzes the frequency of metaphoric use in English writings of non-English majorswith different English proficiencies, explaining some differences and causes of the use of metaphoriclanguage, and suggesting some implications to emphasize the metaphoric use in the process ofcurriculum design and English teaching.

 

1.1 Background of the present research
Language exists with human, and human being does what they want to do with language. Humansurvive in the world built with language, and develop themselves in the behavior of language.“Language is the existence of other beings, and it is also the behavior to achieve other actions. In otherword, language is the most basic behavior and life form” (Qian Guanlian, 2005, p.70). Just because ofthis, people take a great interest in exploring language and its significance. This phenomenon will onlyincrease instead of decreasing. Since ancient time, scholars have always paid a close attention tometaphor as a common phenomenon in language. Especially the metaphor put forward in the bookMetaphor We Live By by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), which breaks the limitations of the previousresearches. Lakoff and Johnson indicate that “metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not only inlanguage but also in thought and action. Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we boththink and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature” (2003, p.4). They think metaphor is thoughtquestion, but not language question and that metaphor is a way of thinking and cognitive means.Metaphor has been considered as a heated subfield in SLA study in the past thirty years.So far, scholars have researched and analyzed the metaphor from different aspects at home andabroad. They consider that there are a lot of reasons why they pay more and more attention to themetaphor. Firstly, from the perspective of theoretical linguistics, many scholars realize gradually theimportance of metaphor research and put it under crucial condition. In the original frame of metaphortheory, its research core is absolute rhetoric function, “For most of us, metaphor is a figure of speech inwhich one thing is compared to another by saying that one is another, as in He is a lion.” (K vecses,Zoltán, 2002, p.vii). As the Encyclopedia Britannica puts it: “metaphor (is a) figure of speech thatimplies comparison between two unlike entities, as distinguished from simile, an explicit comparisonsignaled by the words like or as.” (Emphasis in the original) But now rhetoric function has just becomea part of metaphor, metaphor research, to a great extent, can be regarded as cognitive research ofmetaphor, which could find from all kinds of academic resources. Secondly, in the past two decades ofcognitive linguistic development, researchers were primarily against that metaphor existed only inwords level. To a certain extent, metaphor is the motivation and interrelationship of figurativeexpressions. “Metaphor, or the means by which one thing is described in terms of something else, hasbeen described as a central tool of our cognitive apparatus.
