Abstract

Along with the quickening of economic globalization, English has gradually become an international language. China’s entry into the WTO has brought about significant opportunities for Chinese economy. Meanwhile, it poses higher requirements for English talents. What present society needs are comprehensive and practical English talents who have good ability in English listening, speaking, reading and writing. A good language testing system, to some extent, can determine how well language learners master a language and reflect their actual English level objectively.
With the rapid growth of our country’s national economy and the popularity of studying abroad in recent decades, IELTS has become increasingly well-known. As an international English language testing system, IELTS has the characteristics of being highly scientific, credible and objective. It is also considered by experts as the most dependable and effective testing system, which can exam the candidates’ actual ability to use English in an objective way.
However, English tests of our country mostly exam English language knowledge and limitedly focus on candidates’ listening, reading and writing skills. College English Education, therefore, is confined to the training of these three skills and overlooks that of speaking; accordingly mute English has become a common phenomenon among College students.
This paper analyzes the current situation of college English testing system in China, and compares and contrasts TEM-4 with IELTS. Based on the advantages and disadvantages of both, it sums up the existing problems of China's English Language Testing System. At the end of this paper, some suggestions for how to improve our English Language Testing System has been proposed. Simultaneously, it profoundly discusses what kind of English language testing system can meet today’s requirement for English talents.

摘要

伴随着经济全球化进程的加快，英语逐渐成为一门国际通用语言。中国入世为中国经济带来巨大契机, 同时对英语人才提出了更高的要求。现今社会所需的是具有英语听说读写能力的综合应用型人才。而完善良好的语言测试系统在一定程度上可以决定语言学习者的语言学习情况，并可较为客观得反映其英语实际水平。
随着近年国名经济的提高，留学热加剧，雅思考试知名度日益提升。雅思作为国际英语水平测试，具有高度科学性、公信度、客观性的特点，被有关专家认为是目前国内外各种英语测试中最为可信和有效的、能够比较客观地考察出考生的实际英语应用能力的测试体系。
我国目前的英语测试则多局限于考察英语语言知识，只考察考生听读写能力。大学英语教育因此也较局限于听读写的训练，而忽略了口语上的培训。哑巴英语因而成为现今大学生较为普遍的问题。
本论文分析了我国大学英语测试系统的现状，并以英语专业四级为例，主要通过专四与雅思考试的比较与对比中，发现两者相同点与不同点，结合两者利弊，总结出我国英语测试系统存在的问题。论文最后，针对我国英语测试系统如何改善给出了一些建议，同时深刻探讨了怎样的英语测试系统才能够与当今英语人才的需求相适应。
