1.4 Research Objectives研究目的
The major objectives of this research are to investigate:1) the overall occurrences of subjunctive mood in the Chinese learner corpus andthe native speaker corpus;2) whether there exists significant difference between the two groups;3) the types of errors of the subjunctive mood committed by Chinese EFLlearners;4) the countermeasures for Chinese EFL learners to overcome such obstacles inthe use of English SM;5) the implications for the EFL learning and teaching in China.
1.5 Research Methodology研究方法论
The basic methodology adopted in the thesis is corpus-based, which involvesboth qualitative and quantitative study. We use two corpus for this contrastivestudy, one is a sub-corpus of the CLEC, the College Learner English Corpus, inwhich there are about 2000 argumentative compositions by Chinese collegestudents (non-majors in English), and the other one is LOCNESS, the Nativespeaker sub-corpus of the International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE) whichis made up of about 200 argumentative essays by native advanced universitystudents. Wordsmith Tools (Scott, 1999) is used for concordancing analysis andthe SPSS for statistics.
1.6 Organization of the Dissertation论文结构
This study aims to make a survey of the acquisition of English SubjunctiveMood by Chinese EFL learners and putting forward countermeasures for learning andteaching of SM in China. This dissertation is organized by the following parts:First chapter is the introduction part; it first describes the research background,research significance, research motivations, research object, and researchmethodology, the research advancement is also concerned, finally it briefly introducesthe organization of the dissertation.In chapter two, we will briefly introduce the theoretical basis for the thesis, i.e.the types of analysis that researchers have used in an attempt to better understand thesecond language acquisition process: they are the Contrastive Analysis (CA), ErrorAnalysis (EA), Interlanguage theory and Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis (CIA),which give theoretical support for exploring the acquisition of English SM by ChineseEFL learners.The third chapter reviews the SLA researches based on corpus both at home andabroad. Firstly we introduces the definition of learner corpora and its value ininterlanguage study, then summarizes the construction and the research results oflearner corpus at home and abroad. ICLE is the focus of the review of interlanguageresearches, and foreign scholars use corpus-bases approach to carry out the study ofinterlaguage. Domestic review focuses on relying on interlanguage research resultsbasing on the learner corpus, pointing out that the currently dominance is computeraided Error Analysis (EA) and the Contrastive Analysis (CA) between interlanguageand target language, or horizontal comparative study of learners interlanguage atdifferent level.
