摘要:Language and culture are two inseparable parts, and they both determine the importance of culture teaching. Since China begun to implement the Reform and Opening-up Policy, exchanges between China and western countries has been increasing day by day.
Ⅰ. Introduction
Language is a part of culture, and it plays an important role in culture. Some sociologists thought that language is the cornerstone of culture — no languages, no cultures. From another aspect, languages are influenced by culture, and languages reflect cultures. That is to say, language reflects the feature of a nation, it not only contains the
history and cultural background of this nation but also contains the view of life, way of life and the way of thought, which comes from the people.
With the further development of globalization and growing exchanges among different cultures, cultivating talents with intercultural awareness to meet the current trend has become China's prior task. Due to the "exam-oriented"
Educational system that China implements, as well as the existing problems in China's educational system, such as teachers' limitation of academic background, and students' attitude toward study, the students generally lack intercultural awareness and ability of communication. They all attach too much importance to the language itself, such as the grammar. However, in real life, language is used to perform certain communication functions, for example, giving directions, exchanging information, or making a complaint, etc. In a traditional language classroom, the teaching focus is often on forms rather than functions. Meanwhile those functions are all familiar with the culture. As a primary stage of English teaching, the middle schools play an important role in cultivating students' intercultural awareness. This
thesis tries to make a general analysis on cultivating students' intercultural awareness in the aspect of teaching and learning.
Ⅱ. The Necessity of Developing Intercultural Awareness
Talking about culture, we must first make clear that what culture is. The first important anthropological definition of culture is presented by Sir Edward Tylor in Primitive Cultures (1871). He defines culture as" that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, customs and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society."(Tylor,1871:19)Intercultural communication, it is frequently used to refer to communication between people from different cultures, which implies a comparison between different cultures. So, it's not difficult to find that how important the role of intercultural awareness plays in language learning.
Intercultural awareness refers to the Intercultural communication among participants on the cultural sensitivity of the cognitive factors, generally divided into four levels: first, to those who have been recognized as the surface is the strange phenomenon of cultural awareness; second, for those with on the other hand native culture and is considered to be incredibly significant awareness of the cultural identity; third, through rational analysis in order to gain awareness of cultural identity; forth, from different cultural point of view of the holder of perceived cultural differences. The fourth level is the Intercultural awareness of the highest state of participants with the requirements of "empathy" and "culture into". So as a primary stage of English teaching, middle school carrys the necessary task to cultivate students' intercultural awareness.
