nt poems and commercial  advertisements  nowadays.  As  for  English  teaching  only, image  schema  does  not  only  be  applied  to  vocabulary  teaching,  but  the instruction  of  translation,  listening,  reading  and  writing.  In  general,  the number of researches about the Image Schema Theory in instruction field is  not  small,  but  when  another  searching  was  carried  out  with  “image schema” and “English teaching in senior high school” in abstract, things get  changed.  There  are  only  9  results.  Among  them,  only  Xu  Dandan (2014)  did  was  about  Task-based  reading  and  writing,  while  the  others were all about vocabulary. Xu mentioned that the Image Schema Theory was  quite  useful  to  explain  knowledge  structure  to  students  and  to improve their ability to recall certain information. Yin Xian (2014) did a research  about  denominal  verbs  with  a  cognitive  theory.  Yin  aimed  to build up a corpus of denominal verbs in senior high school.

Chapter Two Theoretical Basis

2.1 The Image Schema Theory
The earliest appearance of “image schema” as a term is in the studies by  Talmy  (1988)  and  Johnson  &  Lakoff  (1987).  “Image  schema”  is  an abstract idea from the interaction between human beings and the external world.  Image  schema  is  a  dynamic  conceptual  structure  which  is  highly organized,  usually  functioning  as  the  basis  of  constructing  and understanding complex concepts. The source of it is the body experience of  pre-concepts  and  it  builds  up  a  communication  bridge  between  body experience  and  abstract  thoughts,  supplying  experience  with  the characteristics  of  continuity  and  structure.  The  metaphor  “ARGUMENT IS  A  WAR”  reveals  a  fact  that  the  characteristics  of  a  war---  fierce  and rival, are shared by both ARGUMENT and WAR. The target domain and the  source  domain  own  the  same  image  schema  (Lakoff,  1990).  Image schema  plays  an  important  role  in  the  process  of  mapping,  connecting sense  to  sensibility.  Lakoff,  and  other  cognitive  linguists,  like  Brugman and  Taylor  did  apply  image  schema  to  explain  polysemy.  Besides cognitive linguistics, the Image Schema Theory has also been researched in other fields, i.e. literature, psychology, etc.
