o  is  just  to  memorize  them.  This  leads  to  years  of  neglect on  the  possible  relationships  among  all  meanings  of  one  VPC.  People memorize  these  meanings  one  by  one;  each  meaning  is  an  independent individual  in  their  mind.  In  a  traditional  English  class,  the  procedures  to teach  VP  constructions  are  always  like  these:  At  first,  the  teacher  helps students  recall  the  meaning  of  the  verb as well as the particle in one VP construction  and  then  he  or  she  writes  down  all  the  meanings  of  the construction on the blackboard or presents on the screen; next, the teacher may  present  several  example  sentences  with  different  meanings  of  the VPC;  finally,  students  are  asked  to  memorize  the  meanings  listed. However,  the  last  step  is  usually  ineffective:  Even  if  the  students memorize  all  the  meanings,  these  meanings  are  easy  to  be  forgotten  for the  relationship  among  each  meaning  is  weak.  As  cognitive  linguistics has  developed  dramatically  fast  in  last  century,  meanings  of  words  or phrases  can  be  connected  via  metaphor,  metonymy  and  image  schema.
