摘要:Appraisal Theory proposed by J. R. Martin and P. R. White provides a criterion for us tointerpret and negotiate the interpersonal meanings in text analysis. As mentioned above, theAppraisal Theory is a particular approach to describing, exploring and explaining the way inwhich language is used to evaluate, to adopt, to construct and manage interpersonal positioningand relationships. DA is a typical and special discourse in our daily life. The potential readers ofDAs take it more seriously than any other advertisements, for the special purpose of DAs isfinding life partners rather than the products or services.This thesis is a tentative contrastive analysis of EDAs and CDAs from the perspective ofAppraisal Theory. Through the study, it is proved that Appraisal Theory is applicable in this kindof discourse. And in this chapter the findings, limitations of the study and some suggestions forfurther study will be provided.
e research can enrich the Appraisal Theory and broaden the research field of theAppraisal Theory. Appraisal Theory, which is developed within the systematic functionallinguistics, is the new development of the interpersonal function. Therefore the Appraisal Theoryis a new tool to explore interpersonal meanings and it has been used in many styles of texts. Butthe research on advertisements, especially the dating advertisements has been paid little attention.The present study, which probes into dating advertisements extends the scope of the applicationof Appraisal Theory in text analysis and enriches Appraisal Theory.Secondly, this thesis will provide a foundation for further studies of DAs. There are a lot ofresearches about the advertisements but as a special genre, the DAs are often neglected.Therefore in this thesis, the author wants to give a deeper exploration of the interpersonalmeaning of the dating advertisements from the perspective of Appraisal Theory and make acontrastive analysis of Appraisal resources between EDAs and CDAs. The findings prove theapplicability and practicability of Appraisal Theory in the analysis of DAs discourse and providea new perspective for DAs study.Thirdly, based on Appraisal Theory, the present study attempts to explore the specificlinguistic features of DAs, which will shed light on the understanding of DAs. Using theAppraisal Theory to analyze the DAs, we can explore how people show themselves,communicate with each other, and then realize the interpersonal meaning of language. Thecontrast between the EDAs and CDAs will be helpful to the translation of them and culturalexchange.
1.4 Organization of the Thesis
The whole thesis is made up of five chapters.Chapter one is the brief introduction to the thesis. This chapter mainly introduces thepurpose, research questions, significance and organizations of the thesis.Chapter two is the
literature review. The previous studies of the DAs and the AppraisalTheory abroad and at home are explored in this part. By this analysis, we will have a generalunderstanding of the previous relative studies and the significance of this research.Chapter three is the theoretical foundation of the thesis. In this chapter the generalintroduction and detailed analysis of Appraisal Theory are provided. And the theoreticalframework for the present thesis will be proposed in the end of this part.Chapter four is the main body of the thesis. This part is the detailed analysis of Appraisalresources in EDAs and CDAs. Applying the theory to the samples analysis, the author describesthe distribution and the realization of the Appraisal resources in DAs, makes a contrast betweenEDAs and CDAs to find the similarities and differences between them and helps readers to havea better understanding of the interpersonal function of Appraisal resources in DAs.Chapter five is the conclusion. In this part the analysis results concluded, and the limitationsand suggestions for further study are proposed.
