Learning Through Life

1. Junior year of high school was probably the hardest year of my life, so far. Personally, I had a lot of problems to deal with. Fighting with the disease of anorexia was a challenge all in its own, but on top of that I was very depressed and stressed out with all the activities I pursued. With all of this, my school work was more challenging than it had ever been for me, but with my perfectionist attitude I was determined to get the same great grade I always had. If I wasn’t training for basketball or track, or at a student council function, I was studying like a mad woman. Looking back on that school year, I still cringe thinking of how unhappy I was. But also as I look back on that year, I think of one great teacher that inspired, challenged, and supported me like a best friend or even a parent.

Mr. Lemon was known in my school to be a great teacher, although his math classes were the hardest. Junior year, I took his honors pre calculus class, which turned out to be the first math class that challenged me. Math had always been a strong subject of mine, but I had never had to work very hard, until his class.

The first test I got a 77, and was quite upset. I knew how to do every homework problem. But you not only had to know how to do the homework, you had to really think about the problems on the test. I wasn’t used to this. I was so used to learning information and taking it in just to spit back out on a test. I realized that this class wasn’t going to be like this. After handing back that first test, Mr. Lemon asked me after class if I had a few minutes after school to see him. I agreed with my face glowing red. I knew that a lot of kids had lower grades than I did, I didn’t quite understand why he wanted to see me.

I went to his room after school that day and he greeted me with a great smile. I relaxed a little. He told me that he knew I would be upset with my grade. He had known that I was one of the top students in my class, and wanted to talk to me about the test. “In comparison to the rest of the class, you did alright. But I know your not happy with that,” he said. He was right. I didn’t care what everyone else did. This was not good enough, I thought. But he also told me that I had to accept that this class was going to be more challenging than other classes I had taken. “You can’t expect to be great at every thing; you can only do your best.” I smiled at him, not realizing at that time that those words would stay with me forever, as the best advice anyone had given me.

From that day on I was never hesitant to stop by after school to get help from Mr. Lemon. If I ever had a question I knew he would be there to great me with a smile, and after he would send me off saying “I’m always more than happy to help a student, especially anyone who truly wants to learn.”
