摘要:Practically, the present study hopes to provide enlightenment for learning and teachingof English majors. It would help the students to understand TEM4-Oral better, and toproperly manage the relationship between teaching and learning. Besides, it would helpthem to find out the shortcomings in their oral English learning, and provide somesuggestions for them.

CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION


1.1 Need and Purpose of the Study

According to Hughes in 1989, the effect of tests on teaching and learning is known as“backwash”. Studying washback is of great importance to improve language teaching, learning, and test designing. Since the 1990s, it has got more and more attention from test designers and researchers in the field of language Education. Some theoretical and empirical washback studies have been carried out abroad, such as Alderson and Wall’sWashback Hypotheses, and Hughes’ PPP Model. Though the washback studies are paidmore and more attention, the empirical ones are not enough.The washback studies in China fall behind those abroad not only in theory but also inpractice. There are many theory introductions and overviews on the washback studies,while empirical studies are rare. The empirical ones are mainly focused on large –scalenational tests, such as NMET (Qi, 2004) and CET (Gu, 2007), however, the washbackstudies on TEM4-Oral are limited, not to mention the empirical studies on it. TEM4-Oral isthe shortened form of Test for English Majors-Band Four Oral Test. It was first launched in1994, and after a five-year trial, a mature testing system was established. Since 1994, it hasbecome formally popularized nationwide. Nowadays, TEM4-Oral is implemented in mostcolleges and universities in China. Additionally, the TEM4-Oral Certificate is broadly usedby human resource department as well as school authorities. As a nationwide test, itseffects on teaching and learning are worth being explored in order to improve learning,teaching and testing in China.
However, the investigations on TEM4-Oral are administered only from theperspectives of reliability and validity, such as Wen’s investigation on the validity ofTEM4-Oral in 2009, and there are limited studies from the view of washback in China.Besides, the previous empirical washback studies in China are not always directly focusedon the aspect of students’ learning. Nowadays, the learner-centered learning is greatlyemphasized and students are paid more and more attention. Here, the present study aims toexplore the washback effects of TEM4-Oral from the perspective of students’ learning, which can make this study more direct and real. Besides, the present study attempts toprovide some empirical evidence for further washback studies. In addition, the findings ofthe study may be helpful to improve TEM4-Oral and shed some light on teaching andlearning of English majors in colleges and universities.


1.2 Significance of the Study
The present study is of great significance in the theoretical, methodological, andpractical aspects.Theoretically, the findings of the present study could partially support Alderson andWall’s Washback Hypotheses, and provides some evidence in China’s context for furthertheoretical studies.Methodologically, there are three major methods involved in washback studies—questionnaire survey, interview and classroom. The first two methods are mostly employedin the washback studies at home and abroad, while the method triangulation is not adoptedvery often, especially in China.
