Industrial relations is named a field of employment relationship, which should be equal between employers and employees (management and unions). Industrial relations pressure is always shown as pay and conditions. Industrial relations in 2011 will be remembered for the dramatic October grounding of the Qantas fleet of aircraft due to disagreement with pay and conditions between Qantas management and unions. As a role of Qantas management, facing with global financial crisis 2008 the company focused on the cost-reduction strategy, ignoring human resource management to placate employees' dissatisfaction. However it is important for unions to fight for effective wage increase and better conditions for employees with state support. Through a long-running bargaining dispute between unions and Qantas management, government intervened into this dispute in the end, and Fair Work Australia resolved the matter through arbitration. Those actions by the state caught the eye of the community that announced their comments on it. It is said that this event could be industrial relations milestones that had significant pressure on economy and daily operation in Qantas management and Australia.

According to the Business Council of Australia (BAC 1989, cited in Bray et al. 2011, p. 7), 'Industrial relations assumes employers and the employees are inherently at loggerheads. As a result, the main concerns of industrial relations are with pay and conditions and resolution of dispute'. The most serious and remarkable industrial dispute refers to October grounding of Qantas in recent years, which has significant negative effects not only on corporate profit and reputation itself but also on national economy and people's livelihood. This report involves three main tasks based on Qantas industrial dispute 2011. Firstly, this report will give the brief background of Qantas Company and analysis the industrial relations pressures in the development Qantas through the whole industrial dispute. Secondly, the author will consider the role of parties focus on government, Qantas management and unions and use relevant theory in industrial relations to assist in the analysis. Finally, options for addressing those industrial relations pressures will be suggested by the author.

Founded in 1920, Qantas is one of the historical airlines in the world, known for its safety, reliability, advanced technology and high quality services in the world (Qantas Spirit of Australia 2012; Qantas Data Book 2011).
