With  these  reading  techniques,  the  content  of  an  article  is  easy  to  be  ignored  and  it  is  a common phenomenon that a student may get the full points but he or she cannot tell what the article  is  talking  about.  Reading  in  this  way  is  separated  from  the  context,  and  strictly speaking, it is not reading but locating the answers. It is difficult to improve students’ reading abilities,  even  if  they  do  a  large  amount  of  reading  practice.  As  a  result,  students  gradually lose their interests and initiatives in reading.

1.2 Purpose and Significance 
This study tries to provide an effective model for English reading teaching in junior high school.  The  theme-based  model  of  CBI  is  different  from  the  traditional  one  that  mainly focuses  on  words  and  grammar  and  it  emphasizes  on  students’  involvement,  understanding and  their  interests.  Consequently,  the  purpose  of  the  study  is  to  find  out  the  influence  of  the theme-based  model  on  the  students’  English  reading  ability  and  the  change  of  their  learning motivation  for  English  reading  through  applying  the  theme-based  model  to  English  reading teaching in junior high school. This  study  is  significant  in  the  following  aspects.  To  begin  with,  compared  with  the previous  studies,  this  thesis  lays  special  stress  on  the  specific  theme-based  model  and systematically  discusses  its  characteristics  and  rationales  rather  than  offering  a  general introduction about CBI. To some extend, the application of a concrete model of CBI is more meaningful  than  applying  the  general  CBI,  which  is  more  feasible  to  be  put  into  the  real teaching situations.
