Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research background
With the development of globalization and socialization, English has been usedwidely in China. English plays an increasingly important role in interacting andacquiring information. It is of great help to develop students’ abilities to obtaininformation in English. It is also a good way for students to broaden their horizons.Therefore, it is necessary for students to improve their English reading abilities. It isalso a great task for teachers to improve students’ reading abilities. According to 2016Curriculum Standards, students should grasp fundamental English skills and languageknowledge, which lays the foundation of authentic communication. Reading is a basiclanguage skill, which is also a useful way for students to improve theircommunicative abilities. However, it is difficult for students to improve their readingabilities in traditional class.At present, the situation of English reading teaching and learning is notoptimistic. Firstly, the teacher plays a dominant role in traditional English class. Inreading class, reading materials are regarded as language points by teachers to teachstudents, and students just receive what they are taught mechanically. Traditionalteaching methods can’t launch so many classroom activities and students have fewchances to interact with each other. They often remain silent in class. Therefore, suchEnglish class can’t arouse their interest in reading English and they feel that Englishclass is boring and reading English is difficult. Secondly, in English reading class,teachers put too much emphasis on vocabulary and grammar rather than theintegrality of English texts. And students spend plenty of time reciting new words,grammar and sentence structures. Students don’t have many chances to get familiarwith the culture in English-speaking countries, which makes it difficult for them tounderstand some of the reading materials.

1.2 The purpose of the study
In traditional learning class, teachers spend a lot of time teaching studentslanguage knowledge, meanwhile students sit in the classroom and gain the knowledgepassively most of the time. However, the cooperative learning is rather different fromtraditional teaching method. The paper aims to testify the effectiveness of cooperativelearning.The purpose of the study is to make English class more attractive, enhancestudents’ interest and motivation, as well as arouse their confidence and stimulatetheir creative learning. Moreover, cooperative learning can provide students with an English class in which students are able to interact with each other, so that the centerof English class can be transformed from teachers into students. Additionally, thestudy aims to testify the effectiveness of cooperative learning in English reading classand attempts to find an an efficient way to put cooperative learning into Englishreading class. In general, the main purpose of the study is to apply cooperativelearning into English reading class and testify whether cooperative learning iseffective in junior high school English reading teaching.
