following section is an overview of the context theory. The development of foreign vocabulary learning research has gone through four stages: 1. Lack of knowledge of vocabulary learning before the 1930s. 2. “Lexical limit” period, master the basic vocabulary in the 1930s and 1960s,. 3. The rise of study foreign language vocabulary in the 1970s. During this period, vocabulary learning began to receive attention. 4. After 1980s, vocabulary learning research has developed a lot, vocabulary learning
strategy has been highly valued. In the
history of English teaching, grammar translation method and audio lingual method played a predominant role. Teachers usually teach English learners some grammar and audio lingual skills. Later, communicative approach was gradually springing up. Thus people began to put a high premium on vocabulary teaching. Johnson (1978) once proposed that people should have practical consciousness and social culture consciousness when they learn and master vocabulary. Richards & Rodgers (2000) put forward an important question. That is what we should learn in vocabulary learning. He also proposed the term of Lexical Competence which includes eight basic aspects:1)Competence of building vocabulary; 2) Competence of mastering its semantic value; 3)Competence of mastering the function and situational context of a word; 4) Competence of mastering syntactic function of a word; 5) Competence of knowing the root and derived form exactly;6) Competence of comprehending translations of words; 7) Competence of comprehending the position of words and its associational words; 8) Competence of mastering word frequency and collocations. Rezaei, O. & Dezhara, S.(2011) pointed out the mastery and application of vocabulary is the basis of learning grammar. They also emphasized that mastering vocabulary was more important than mastering grammar’s structure.
