Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
Vocabulary is one of the three basic elements (pronunciation,vocabulary and grammar). Vocabulary learning occupies an important position in foreign language learning and teaching. In the process of English learning, the number of vocabularies that students master not only is the cornerstone of the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, but also has an important influence on the students' interest in learning. In general, the greater the vocabulary of a student, the more accurate he or she can express, the higher the learning efficiency, the lighter the learning burden, and the more interested in learning. Linguist Wilkins pointed out that “if there is no grammar, people can only express limited things, but if there is no vocabulary, people can express nothing.” National English Curriculum Standard (2011) requires students to master both the regulated words and phrases and use proper words to communicate in a certain situation. However, traditional teaching method can’t meet the requirements. Students learn the vocabulary lists by rote instead of using words in specific language environment. Although students have a lot of vocabulary input, their ability to use vocabulary is low. What’s more, the phenomenon of polysemy in English vocabulary is ubiquitous and it is difficult to determine its meaning without a specific context. As can be seen from the above, English teachers urgently need to find effective vocabulary teaching methods.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
National English Curriculum Standard (2011) promotes that students need learn vocabulary, use vocabulary in context theory. It also emphasizes that teachers should provide authentic context to help students observe、imitate and experience. In this way, teachers can help English learners to experience authenticity and communication in vocabulary learning. Context teaching lays stress on the vocabulary building and vocabulary expansion. It is useful for the students to master vocabulary and distinguish different meanings and usage in different context. It is the most remarkable feature of context teaching.
