Here the focus is on the range of basic issues that wereconsidered during the formative period of networks and those important issues that followed the successof the client-server computing.

The sub-module will provide a concrete base for developing the fundamental knowledge about LANs. Theintention has been to offer a well–rounded view of many issues rather than focusing on individualexamples. These include various types, systems, features, components, topologies, standards,technologies, servers, caballing, security issues, and a host of other issues that form the fabric of a LAN.

With this sub-module students will learn how LANs can help them work better by developing someunderstanding about how LANs work and what they can offer.

Part 2, shifts the attention from generics to the specifics of construction industry while articulating someof the main technological tools that are available for exploitation by the industry.

This section investigates the suitability of communications services for constructionproject environment. It is designed to provide assistance in selecting the mostappropriate technology to support the business needs of the construction environment.The section aims to inform students or, otherwise Project and IT Managers withinconstruction companies, of the communications technologies currently available, andthe impact of deploying various business applications across them. However, the guidewill also prove useful to other participants such as Estimators within these organisationsin assessing the cost of providing communications for the project.

The guide provides a practical technology roadmap to assist the student indetermining the most appropriate technologies for effective site communications.
