1. Background

1.1 An Overview of the Worldwide Apparel Industry
The clothing industry is one of the most mobile industries www.51lunwen.org/computer/ in the world (Martin 2007). Traditionally fashion apparel retailers used their capability of forecasting consumer demand and fashion trends (known as ready-to-wear) long before the actual time of consumption in order to compete in the market (Guercini 2001). The fashion apparel industry has significantly evolved, particularly over the last 20 years, when the boundaries of the industry started to expand (Djelic&Ainamo 1999). International export trade in clothing increased by approximately 118% in the period 1990 to 2003 (UNCTAD, 2005).  The nature of these global networks poses significant challenges for quick and accurate response in the clothing sector. Ensuring the right product volume and mix within retail stores from a globally dispersed supply network requires innovative operational strategies and practices. The changing dynamics of the fashion industry since then, such as the fading of mass production, increase in number of fashion seasons, and modified structural characteristics in the supply chain have forced retailers to desire low cost and flexibility in design, quality, delivery and speed to market (Doyle, Moore, & Morgan 2006). Franks (2000) suggested "sense and respond" as the key strategy to maintain a profitable position in the increasingly dynamic and demanding market. A key defining characteristic of rapid responsiveness and greater flexibility, in this context, is to maintain closer relationships between suppliers and buyers (Wheelright,1992). Demanding consumers and competitive retailing have generated pressures to respond with multiple refreshes per season. The focus is on replenishment of the specific styles, designs and colors that are selling well, whilst reducing, changing or abandoning those that turn out to be less popular than forecast. This reduces the problem of marking down the price of less popular clothing that fails to sell in the forecasted volumes (Ferdows et al., 2004; Tokatli, 2007). This trend, when taken to the extreme of compressing design times, multiple refreshes, coupled with very quick response from the supply base, and all done at low cost, describes the so-called ‘Fast Fashion’ market (Tokatli, 2007). The concept of 'fast fashion' became popular within the apparel industry. Fast fashion has presented many challenges for firms in the apparel retail industry.IT One of these challenges has been to develop an IT (IT) infrastructure that enables efficient and timely communication throughout the global supply chain.
