　　The choice of this research topic is primarily attributed to the followingconsiderations:Firstly, speech，one of the vocalized forms of human language，has been seen as aparticular type of communication to establish and maintain the relationship between thespeaker and the listeners with the speaker's own special aims and meanings. Speechesmade in different times or different situations by different speakers with differentpurposes for different listeners may have different features. All these leave much spacefor research on speech when doing discourse analysis.Secondly, as to Halliday (2000) himself，SFG is a "natural" grammar for textanalysis, and one of its purposes is that one would make it possible to say sensible anduseful things about any written or spoken text. Furthermore, among the threemetafunctions carried by language, interpersonal function tries to reveal the transactionbetween the speaker and the listeners. Modality system，which is the main method toachieve the speaker's interpersonal meanings一special purposes, is worth studying.Thirdly, though there have been a great number of studies in Obama's speeches,almost all of them have their own limitations. For example, some of them just involveone kind of Obama's speeches, such as the political speeches. What's more, almost noprevious study has chosen different kinds of Obama's speeches as the research data. Asa result, almost no study mentioned the factors influencing the speaker's choice ofspecific modality device. So a research on interpersonal meanings of modality inObama's speeches of different kinds will definitely provide a new angle for speechanalysis.1.3 Significance of the StudySpeeches，especially the presidential speeches，have been ever fresh data fordiscourse analysis. It seems that Obama's speeches have become the most popular datasince his inauguration. Among all of the previous studies, the majority of themconcerned with the interpersonal meanings of modality. But most of them focus only onthe interpersonal meanings in political speeches, and no deep analysis given to discussthe factors influencing the speaker's choice of specific modality device.
