CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 General statement
Writing, as one of the basic four communicative skills, is a main form of language output. Writing can promote the process from input to intake, hence it can help to improve students' integral skills. “Most of the students will benefit from writing”(Harmer, 2000, p.46). Such importance of writing is strongly emphasized in the New English Curriculum for China's middle schools , which requires higher demands upon our middle school students for a comprehensive English competence. The New English Curriculum requires students that they can collect and prepare writing materials according writing needs, can write
essays, letters and so on and then revise them under teachers’ guidance, can use common conjunctions to express a logical order and clear relationship, can describe people and events simply, and can write simple paragraphs or instructions according to pictures or tables. As a productive skill, writing is not only an important way for students to output language synthetically but one crucial part of the language learning evaluation because it is important for any language to communicate by the form of writing. Writing is an important way for human beings to communicate with each other, exchange information, express their ideas, share their social experiences and make themselves understood better. For Chinese students who start learning English in primary schools, learning English systematically, and using language comprehensively in senior high schools and colleges, English writing in junior middle schools plays the role of a bridge and footstone. “In order to achieve a certain English writing level, the students must absorb amount of language input” (Wang Chuming, 2000, p.58). But the current situations about middle school students' writing ability and the study of writing teaching in China are not quite satisfactory. Due to various reasons and diverse aspects, English writing teaching is often neglected and teachers seldom devote themselves to studying it. The teaching of writing has not been given enough attention. As a result, writing became the most difficult part for language teaching and learning. Based on the investigation of the current situations of English writing in middle schools, this
thesis tries to prove the importance and test the effect of model-imitating through an action research, which will be taken in a middle school.
